It was a terrifying display of the growing violence on the streets of Syria, and for Shadi, the limit of what he could endure. Fearful for his family’s lives, he took them and fled. Their story could have easily ended in tragedy, but after surviving two years as refugees, the Al Dakhil family is now safe and thriving in Canada thanks to the sponsorship of Holy Redeemer Catholic Parish in Ottawa and the Knights of Columbus. Jose Magana had fallen into the world of gangs and addiction. Amid his struggles, he had an encounter with Christ, putting him on a new path. His recovery was fraught with intense challenges, including the urge to commit suicide. Jose overcame his addiction and has now been sober for 29 years. He has since become a brother Knight and a regional growth director for the Knights of Columbus, and he believes his work to be a vocation, one of evangelization.
